Abstract

The rapid development in the online gaming industry has created a competitive and highly intense digital interaction environment. One of the phenomena that appears in this environment is toxic behavior, especially in the way players communicate. This study aims to identify and explain the differences in communication behavior among Mobile Legends: Bang - Bang players who are part of the rrq Kingdom East Java community, both when in-game and outside the game (real life). This study applies a qualitative approach to the case study method. Data collection was conducted through in-depth interviews and observations involving the participation of five informants who are active players. Data analysis is based on the theory of dramatism by Kenneth Burke and the theory of network society by Manuel Castells as a conceptual framework. The results revealed that toxic communication is more common in the game, which can be seen from the presence of trashtalking, flaming, and various forms of cyberbullying through in-game chat features. This is due to the presence of pressure from competition, anonymity, as well as emotional game situations. In contrast, outside of the gaming environment, players tend to communicate in a more organized and courteous manner.This research is expected to contribute to the advancement of digital communication studies, as well as being a cornerstone in creating better communication ethics in the online gaming community.
