Abstract

Geopark Ijen Bondowoso is a tourist area that holds rich natural and cultural potential to be developed as a sustainable destination. This study aims to: (1) Analyze the development of tourism in Geopark Ijen using the Penta Helix model, and (2) Describe the relationships among the five key actors (government, academics, businesses, communities, and media) in supporting tourism development in the area. The research employed a descriptive qualitative approach, with data collected through interviews, observations, and documentation. The findings indicate that the implementation of the Penta Helix model has made a positive contribution to the development of Geopark Ijen. The government has established supporting policies and formed a managing institution for the Geopark. Academics have contributed through research and community education on the importance of preserving nature and culture. Local communities have become actively involved in managing tourism based on village potential. Business actors have developed amenities and creative local products such as homestays and souvenirs. The media has played a role in promoting the Geopark through various digital platforms and educational campaigns. Although budget constraints remain in some sectors, these challenges have not diminished the collaborative spirit among the actors in realizing inclusive and sustainable tourism development. The Penta Helix model fosters complementary collaboration among stakeholders and strengthens tourism sustainability. This success is also supported by the implementation of the 5A indicators (Attraction, Accessibility, Amenities, Activities, Accommodation) as a holistic development approach. This study proves that cross-sector synergy is key to developing geopark-based sustainable tourism destinations.
