Abstract

This study aims to examine the relationship between social disconnectedness and social media addiction among migrant students, with the Big Five Personality serving as a moderator. The study involved 201 participants who met the criteria of being overseas students studying outside their province or island. The analysis was conducted using moderation analysis techniques with the SmartPLS 4 software. Based on the research results, it can be concluded that there is a correlation between social disconnection and social media addiction with the big five personality as a moderator. Social disconnectedness has a positive and significant relationship with social media addiction, showing that the higher the level of social disconnectedness, the greater the likelihood of individuals experiencing social media addiction (β = 0.216, p = 0.001). Furthermore, the Big Five Personality was found to act as a moderator that strengthens the relationship between social disconnectedness and social media addiction (β = 0.149, p = 0.006), although the moderating effect is small (f square = 0.046). Overall, this study provides empirical evidence that social disconnectedness contributes to social media addiction among migrant students, with the Big Five Personality acting as a factor that enhances this relationship.
