Abstract

Academic stress is a condition that arises when academic demands exceed an individual's resources or abilities to cope with them. Factors influencing academic stress can be divided into two categories: internal factors that stem from within the individual, such as hardiness personality traits. Individuals with a hardiness personality tend to manage the situations they face effectively, exhibit strong commitment to various life activities, and view change as a challenge. Another internal factor is optimism, which refers to an individual’s belief that bad events or failures are temporary, do not affect activities as a whole, and are not due to personal fault. This study aims to establish a relationship between hardiness personality and optimism with academic stress in working students. The study population consists of working students in Surabaya, with a sample size of 418 students who are active and work part-time or full-time. The study uses a quantitative approach with data collection methods using scales that have been tested for validity and reliability. The instruments used include academic stress scales, hardiness personality scales, and optimism scales. The results of the study indicate that hardiness personality influences academic stress in working students, while optimism does not significantly affect academic stress in this group.
