Abstract

The development of digital technology has significantly increased the use of social media, including dating apps, which can influence users' psychological well-being. College students, as one of the most active users of social media, are particularly vulnerable to negative impacts such as loneliness, Fear of Missing Out (FoMO), and social media addiction. This study aims to examine the role of FoMO as a mediator in the relationship between loneliness and social media addiction among college students who use dating apps. This study involved 152 active dating app users selected through accidental sampling. Data collection utilized Likert-scale-based instruments, including the Social Media Addiction Scale designed by Griffith (2005), the Loneliness Scale based on Russell's theory (1996), and the Fear of Missing Out (FoMO) Scale developed by Przybylski (2013). Mediation analysis revealed an indirect effect value of 0.024 with a significance level of p = 0.583 (p > 0.05), indicating a positive but nonsignificant correlation between loneliness and social media addiction through FoMO. However, the direct effect showed a value of 0.859 with a significance level of p = 0.000 (p < 0.05), demonstrating a positive and significant correlation between loneliness and social media addiction. The results indicate that the direct effect of loneliness on social media addiction is greater than the indirect effect mediated by FoMO.
