Abstract

This study aims to understand the meaning and construction of social reality related to piercing practices among adolescents and how individuals deal with the stigma inherent in the context of culture and social environment. Using a qualitative approach through in-depth interviews with three main informants— Vero, Sayu, and Rio—this study analyzes piercing as a symbol of identity, freedom, and a coping mechanism for individuals. The results of the study show that the meaning of piercing is subjective and varied, including as a form of self expression, increasing self-confidence, and diversion from self-harm behavior. However, this meaning often conflicts with the construction of objective reality in conservative societies that view piercing as a symbol of delinquency and rebellion. This stigma is especially felt in the family environment and the older generation, who tend to have negative views of piercing practices. On the other hand, progressive environments such as peer communities and campuses provide better acceptance, where piercing is seen as a fashion trend and part of a lifestyle. Within the framework of Berger and Luckmann's social reality construction theory, the processes of externalization, objectivation, and internalization are clearly visible in the experiences of the informants. Vero tries to reconstruct her family's views through dialogue and self-verification. Sayu rejects stigma by internalizing the value of freedom and focusing on a supportive environment. Meanwhile, Rio adopts an adaptive strategy by hiding piercing in a conservative environment and expressing himself freely in a circle of friends. In conclusion, the social reality related to piercing is not static, but dynamic and continues to be reconstructed through interactions between individuals and the social environment. This study confirms that the meaning of piercing is highly dependent on social and cultural contexts, and shows the active role of individuals in creating and reconstructing the social reality they face.
