Abstract

This study aims to examine the role of quality of life as a mediator in the relationship between social support and death anxiety among Yonif 503 soldiers stationed in Papua. Assignments in conflict-prone areas increase the risk of death anxiety, which can be influenced by social support and quality of life. This research employed a correlational quantitative design, involving 165 respondents selected through accidental sampling. Data collection instruments included the Death Anxiety Scale (DAS), a Social Support scale based on Sarafino’s theory, and the Quality of Life scale derived from WHOQOL-BREF. The results showed a significant negative relationship between social support and death anxiety (r = -0.421, p < 0.001), as well as a significant positive relationship between social support and quality of life (r = 0.536, p < 0.001). Furthermore, quality of life demonstrated a significant negative relationship with death anxiety (r = -0.478, p < 0.001) and acted as a mediator in the relationship between social support and death anxiety. These findings highlight the importance of strong social support in enhancing quality of life and reducing death anxiety among soldiers operating in high-risk environments. This study provides practical implications for psychosocial interventions aimed at improving the psychological well-being of soldiers by strengthening their social support systems and quality of life
