Abstract

This research investigates the impact of rice husk ash (RHA) and the burning duration of rice husks on the characteristics of mortar. Rice husk ash, a byproduct from the rice milling process, is abundant and has the potential to be utilized as a supplementary material in cement production. The primary objective of this study was to evaluate how the duration of the rice husk burning process and varying percentages of rice husk ash influence the physical and mechanical properties of mortar, particularly its compressive strength, water absorption, and bulk density. In the experimental phase, rice husk ash was produced by burning rice husks for two different durations, namely 4 hours and 6 hours. Various percentages of rice husk ash—0%, 5%, 10%, and 15%—were then incorporated into the mortar mix as a partial replacement for cement. The mortar samples were tested at three curing ages: 7, 14, and 28 days. Standard tests, including compressive strength, water absorption, and bulk density, were conducted to assess mortar performance. The results showed that adding rice husk ash improved the mortar’s compressive strength up to a replacement level of 10%, after which the strength began to decrease. The highest compressive strength was obtained from mortar with a 10% rice husk ash mix, burned for 6 hours, reaching 32,04 MPa. Burning duration also showed a significant effect, with a 6-hour burn yielding higher quality ash, which enhanced mortar performance. This is influenced by the silica (SiO2) content in the rice husk ash. Water absorption decreased with increased rice husk ash content, suggesting better durability. The findings of this study support the potential use of rice husk ash as a sustainable alternative in mortar production, contributing to the reduction of environmental impact from cement production.
