Abstract

Family communication is key to harmony and well-being. In a patriarchal culture, the father, as the head of the family, plays an important role in decision-making and leadership. However, the fatherless phenomenon, meaning the absence of a father, poses a significant challenge, particularly in family communication. In Lamongan society, which is deeply rooted in patriarchal culture, the absence of a father often leads to negative stigma and poor perceptions, affecting relationships and communication within fatherless families. Patriarchal culture sets high expectations for the father's role as a leader and protector of the family. Fatherless families that do not meet these norms are often stigmatized, creating an imbalance in the distribution of power and roles within the family. Patriarchal expectations hinder effective communication and societal acceptance. This negative perception also causes feelings of shame, low self-esteem, and insecurity, exacerbating difficulties in open and honest communication within fatherless families. In this study, the researcher used a qualitative method with a phenomenological approach. Data collection techniques included interviews, observations, and documentation. The results shown in this study indicate that patriarchal culture affects communication in fatherless families, where the absence of the father forces the mother to take on dual roles as caregiver and breadwinner. Consequently, family communication becomes rigid and ineffective due to internal tension. The pressure of patriarchal culture leads to disharmony and difficulty in overcoming social stigma, causing fatherless families to often struggle in building strong and positive dynamics. To adapt, fatherless families tend to ignore the existence of the non-contributing father.
