Abstract

This study analyzed the role of interpersonal communication in increasing school interestamong children who dropped out of school in Wonokusumo Street, Surabaya City, using symbolic communication theory as a theoretical framework. Through qualitative methodswith in-depth interviews and participatory observation, it was found that effective interpersonal communication between teachers, parents, and children can motivatechildren to return to school. Teachers who use empathic symbols and personal attention, as well as parents who are actively involved in their children's education, successfully increase children's interest inschool. In addition, supportive symbolic communication plays an important role in creating a conducive environment for children. The findings confirm the importance of aholistic approach that integrates symbolic communication in an effort to address the dropout problem and improve access to education in the area.
