Abstract

This research is entitled "Interpersonal Communication Gay in Building Commitment to Romantic Relationships" with the purpose of research to find out interpersonal communication and supporting factors for gays in determining their commitment to romantic relationships. Through both verbal and nonverbal communication carried out by gays in achieving their romantic relationships, this study shows how communication can affect gay openness when establishing romantic relationships. This phenomenological research uses the method of 5 stages of personal communication by DeVito (1989), which consists of contact, involvement, familiarity, destruction, and disconnection, and the analysis knife used is the theory of Social Penetration by Altman and Taylor with the stages of orientation, affective exploration exchange, affective exchange, stable exchange through these stages to help researchers deepen the results of the analysis to see how communication and openness of the gay layer affect the romantic relationship that is lived. These ten gay informants showed different results and showed the results that not all gay informants went through the five stages of interpersonal communication perfectly, and the onion analogy of this social penetration, even though they passed all the stages, did not prove that a person was able to open the deepest layers.
