Abstract

Body shaming is a phenomenon that is often experienced by women, including in Surabaya. This research aims to understand the meaning of body shaming and its impact based on experience. This research uses phenomenological qualitative method with in-depth interview technique. The research participants were three women in Surabaya who were victims of body shaming. This study found that body shaming is defined by women in Surabaya as negative comments or actions directed at their physical appearance. This meaning of body shaming is shaped and shared through social interactions with others, both in person and through social media. Body shaming can negatively impact women's self-image and confidence, and trigger unhealthy coping strategies. The meaning of body shaming and its impact on women's experiences in Surabaya can be understood through symbolic interaction theory. This theory explains how meaning is formed and shared through social interaction, and how symbols and language are used to communicate that meaning. Body shaming is a serious issue that can negatively impact women's lives. This research provides insight into the meaning of body shaming and its impact on women's experiences in Surabaya, and can help develop effective strategies to address body shaming and promote a more inclusive and supportive culture.
