Abstract

The Minangkabau tribe is included in the 10 largest tribes in Indonesia which dominates West Sumatra. Minangkabau customs are one of the unique customs in Indonesia, especially as the community adheres to a Matrilineal system where the bloodline is drawn from the mother's side. Matrilineal customs are less common in world community groups than Patrilineal, in this case films are mass media that can be used as a representation of the social conditions that exist in a particular society, films even bring back the cultural values and myths that exist in society. The drama series with Minangkabau intrigue that caught my attention for research was Saiyo Sakato, where a very complex story is wrapped in a family comedy. The approach used is a qualitative method using Roland Barthes' semiotic analysis, and Stuart Hall's theory of representation to be able to see more deeply the meaning of each Matrilineal element which includes its characteristics, namely; 1). The Position of Women, 2). Inheritance, 3). Revenge and 4). Relationships (Marriage & Polygamy) depicted in the Drama Series Saiyo Sakato. Based on the research results, in general this drama series represents Matrilineal culture where the role and position of women is very important and central in determining the moral life and dignity of a family. Based on this, the researcher analyzed that this drama series rejects the construction of patriarchal culture where the task of decision making in the family is the nature of men.
