Abstract
Virtual communities occur because of continuous communication in cyberspace. The use of communication patterns in online games, especially in the Valorant game, has become a crucial element in the gaming experience. This research aims to describe the communication patterns, of PlayComms community members when playing the online game Valorant, with a focus on the use of text messages, sounds and symbols. Through interviews and observations, the research found that in-game communication features and Discord play an important role in team coordination. The absence of visuals in online communication is not a significant obstacle for most members, who feel more comfortable communicating online. Using Discord has proven to be very effective for various communication purposes. Members often use typical terms and abbreviations, which can be an obstacle for new members, but the community has ways to ensure effective understanding. Strategies for dealing with miscommunication include keeping communication from colliding and encouraging each other. Authoritarian communication patterns are sometimes adopted by team leaders in critical situations, but a balance between firm instructions and listening to input is important to maintain team cooperation. This research concludes that communication patterns in the PlayComms community when playing Valorant are strongly influenced by the use of communication technology, adaptation to visual absence, and effective communication strategies. It is hoped that the results of this research will provide insight for game developers and the gaming community in increasing interaction and collaboration between players.
