Abstract

This research examines the representation of childfree in Cek Toko Sebelah 2 through Rolan Barthes’ semiotic analysis. This movie was chosen because it is on of the ew Indonesian films that raise the topic of childfree. The semiotic analysis method is used to reveal the meaning and message contained in the representation of childfree in the film. The data analyed in depth using Barthes’ semiotic concepts such us denotation, connotation, and myth, to understand how the characters in the film represent childfree and how it is conveyed to the audiens. Film as one of the media to disseminate information to audiences, which in today's world cannot be separated from modern life. This research contributes to the understanding of how media, especially movies, influence people's perceptions and knowledge of childfree. Childfree is one of the discourses carried by the radical feminism school, where this school argues that gender injustice is caused by biological differences between men and women which result in women being required to utilize their wombs. As a result, radical feminists often criticize patriarchal structures and family customs as the root of women's oppression. The results of this study show that Cek Toko Sebelah 2 depicts a representation of childfree, related to childfree which is still taboo among Indonesian people because when women are married, they will be required to have a child. Then the decision to go childfree can also come from past trauma that a person has. However, although it is still considered taboo in Indonesia, some couples who choose to go childfree succeed in providing understanding to related parties affected by the couple's childfree decision, in this case the parents and in-laws of the couple. Hopefully, this research can provide additional information about childfree as represented in Cek Toko Sebelah 2 and further researchers can develop this research from various aspects and other analytical methods.
