Abstract

The tradition of capture marriage on Sumba Island has long been an integral part of local culture, but has also attracted controversy as a potential crime against humanity. This research uses a qualitative approach to explore the perceptions and views of community leaders regarding this practice on Sumba Island. Through a phenomenological study, researchers conducted in-depth interviews, observations and document analysis with the aim of finding the meaning of the capture marriage tradition in the Sumba community. The findings indicate differences of opinion between supporters and critics of this tradition. Its supporters regard it as preserving cultural identity and a means of strengthening social ties, while its critics highlight human rights violations, especially against women. The shift in the meaning of this tradition over time is also highlighted, reflecting the challenge of maintaining a balance between preserving local culture and universal humanitarian principles. In conclusion, this research emphasizes the need for a thoughtful approach to adapting or changing the marriage-capture tradition so that it remains relevant without compromising fundamental human rights values.
