Abstract

Indonesia has vast maritime territories with a diverse range of marine life spread across its regions. Most of these marine organisms can be utilized by the local government. However, some still become waste, especially around the beaches. This waste is generally in the form of shells that cannot be properly processed by the community, resulting in them being scattered in beach areas. This study focuses on one marine organism, the Blood Cockle (Anadara Granosa). Blood cockle shells contain layers of calcium carbonate that protect their shells and serve as a defense mechanism against predators. The calcium content in these shells is important in the cement hydration process, helping to form early strength and improve particle bonding in concrete. Calcium carbonate can also bind water, potentially replacing part of the cement in the concreting process, which can reduce COz emissions from the cement reaction. This research uses blood cockle shells as a cement substitute material with varying percentages of 0%, 5%, 7.5%, 10%, and 12.5% by cement weight. The cement testing results show that the higher the blood cockle mixture content in the cement, the faster the cement setting process. The blood cockle content in the mortar also increases the bulk density of the mortar compared to normal mortar. Compressive strength test results show that with a 10% blood cockle content, the highest compressive strength achieved is 35.361 MPa at 28 days, which decreases if the percentage exceeds 10%. Water absorption data indicate that the higher the blood cockle content, the higher the water absorption value, making mortar with blood cockle mixtures more prone to water loss compared to normal mortar.
