Abstract
Academic stress is mental distress related to academic factors or unawareness of the possibility of failure in the academic field because students face many demands such as school exams, answering teacher questions in class, showing learning progress at school, demands to understand what the teacher conveys during teaching and learning. , competition for achievement with fellow classmates, as well as fulfilling the expectations of parents and teachers in academics. Research reveals that expressive writing therapy can reduce academic stress in middle school students, both girls and boys. This research aims to determine the effectiveness of expressive writing therapy to reduce academic stress in junior high school students, both female and male students at SMPN 1 Kampak. The hypothesis in this research is that Expressive Writing Therapy is effective in reducing academic stress in junior high school students and there is a difference in academic stress in male and female junior high school students before and after giving expressive writing therapy to junior high school students. The subjects in this study were 60 students from SMP 1 Kampak with 30 control students and 30 experimental students. The data collection tool in this research is the academic stress scale. This scale uses a Likert scale model consisting of 5 alternative answers. The results obtained from the analysis of the paired sample t-test showed that the Sig value was obtained. (2-tailed) is 0.000 < 0.05, which means there is an average difference between the Pretest and Posttest results. So it can be concluded that there is an influence of expressive writing therapy in reducing academic stress in junior high school students and the results of the analysis of the independent paired sample t-test obtained a sig value. (2-tailed) in the "equal variances assumed" section is 0.003 < 0.05, so it can be concluded that there is a difference in academic stress between female and male students after being given expressive writing therapy.
