Abstract

The practical ability of composite materials to be made, both in terms of strength, stiffness, lightness, as well as resistance to corrosion and more economical prices, encourages the use of composite materials as another method or substitute for conventional metal materials such as: steel, aluminum, solid glass in various products. highly developed. This research aims to determine the impact of fiber volume fraction and the impact of fiber alkali treatment on the mechanical properties of abaca fiber reinforced composites. In this study, the vacuum resin infusion method was used. Making a composite with a volume fraction of 40% with a soaking time of 1 hour has the highest tensile test value with an average maximum stress value of 136.16 MPa. And the lowest tensile strength value is found at a volume fraction variation of 20% with a soaking time of 3 hours with an average maximum stress value of 58.76 MPa. From these results it can be concluded that the greater the number of fibers, the stronger the strength of the composite and the longer the abaca fiber is soaked in alkali, the strength of the abaca fiber will decrease.The SEM test results show fiber pull out and debonding caused by damage from the tensile test results. The vacuum resin infusion method is very effective because there are almost no voids in the composite so that the matrix and reinforcement can blend perfectly.
