Abstract

The development of highways as a crucial element in supporting economic growth and national resilience requires attention to the quality and efficiency of construction. In the context of flexible pavement, Asphalt Concrete-Wearing Course (AC-WC) plays a vital role in bearing traffic loads and resisting erosion effects, as well as preventing surface softening. The use of filler materials such as calcium carbonate and cement has been a focal point of research to enhance the characteristics of AC-WC mixtures. This study aims to conduct a comprehensive analysis of the physical and mechanical characteristics of AC-WC mixtures using calcium carbonate and cement as filling materials. Additionally, the research includes a cost production analysis to provide a comprehensive understanding of the potential application of these mixtures in rood projects. The study compares the characteristics of AC-WC mixtures with variations of calcium carbonate and cement fillers at 1%, 1.5%, and 2% concentrations. Testing involves Marshall parameters, filler-bitumen content ratios, air void (VIM). flow, optimum asphalt content, and residual stability. The results indicate that all filler concentration variations, whether calcium carbonate or cement, meet the General Specification of Bina Marga (Revision 2) 2018. However, superior characteristics are observed at a 2% filler concentration, with optimal stability, filler-bitumen content ratio, VIM, and residual stability. From a production cost perspective, the use of 1% calcium carbonate proves to be more economical compared to cement. This research provides valuable insights for the road construction industry in selecting optimal AC- WC mixtures in terms of quality and economy.
