Abstract

This study raises the topic of racism that describes social problems that often occur in black groups in the movie Antebellum. This film stars Janelle Monae who lives in two different lives, namely as a writer and activist who is active in defending the rights of equality for black citizens, and in another life Veronica is a slave prisoner on a cotton plantation owned by the Confederate Army of the United States. This study aims to analyze the hidden meanings and signs of racist behavior towards black groups contained in the film Antebellum using John Fiske's semiotic analysis model which is divided into three levels of coding process from The Codes of Television theory, namely the level of reality, the level of representation, and the level of ideology. This research uses a qualitative research method with a semiotic analysis approach. This research uses an extended observation technique, where researchers watch and analyze Antebellum films. Data collection techniques used media analysis and observation. The results of this study show that this film wants to convey messages to audiences regarding racist behavior towards black groups, one of which is experienced by Veronica. However, from the suffering experienced by Veronica, her struggle paid off when she dared to defend the rights of freedom and equality for black groups.
