Abstract

The development of the industrial world has led to an increasing need for materials, especially a product where the use of metal materials in various product components is reduced, due to the weight of components made of metal and also the relatively difficult formation process. So that other materials are developed that have the desired characteristics of metal materials. The material developed is a composite, a composite is a combination of two different materials or components and has different properties. Composite materials with natural fibres as polymer blend fillers are starting to be widely used in the field of materials engineering. Thus as a substitute for synthetic fibres, abaca banana tree stem fibre is used, abaca fibre is a useful plant because it is one type of fibre that has potential, and is a substitute or alternative that can be used for epoxy matrix composite reinforcement. The use of natural fibres, namely abaca banana stems, requires an alkalisation process that can improve the compatibility between the fibres and the matrix. This will reduce the hemicellulose, lignin or pectin content of the fibre which will increase the surface roughness resulting in better mechanical interlocking between fibre and matrix. Tensile testing of the specimens was carried out to determine the level of mechanical strength of the abaca banana stem fibre composite according to ASTM D-638 standard. Making specimens using the VARI (Vacuum Assisted Resin Infusion) method with the aim of reducing the voids trapped in the specimen or mould when flowed with epoxy resin. Vacuum Compressor using ¼ hp in the VARI method (Vacuum Assisted Resin Infusion) aims to determine the effect of two variations between the Naoh (alkalisai) process 2%, 4%, 6% and fibre volume fraction 20%, 30%, 40%. The tensile test results of the highest tensile strength in the 6%-40% variation composite with the result of 114.6 Mpa. The SEM (Scanning Electron Microscope) test was conducted as evidence that the 2%-20% variation had the lowest value of 39 Mpa and the 6%-40% variation had the highest value of 114.6 Mpa.
