Abstract

Indonesia is one of the most populous countries in the world where 31% of the total Indonesian population is the millennial generation. The millennial generation, which is often called the digital generation, often uses the internet almost throughout their lives and chooses not to interact with their friends because they are comfortable with the gadgets they have. The time spent on social media is usually long enough, even for hours, to forget the time. This is one of them triggered by a lack of self-control and fear of missing out in the millennial generation so that it has an impact on social media addiction. The goal to be achieved in this study is to test empirically the relationship between self-control and fear of missing out on social media addiction in the millennial generation. The measuring instrument used in this study consisted of three scales, namely self-control, fear of missing out and addiction to social media. The sample in this study is the millennial generation aged around 19-25 years who live in the city of Surabaya. The participant taking technique in this study used a quota sampling technique, the number of which was determined using the help of the GPower application so that 68 subjects were obtained. The data analysis used was Spearman Rho. The results showed that the first hypothesis was rejected because it could not be proven, because it did not fulfill the normality distribution assumption test and was not linear, and heteroscedasticity occurred. The second hypothesis of the study was also rejected, because self-control is significantly positively correlated with social media addiction. The third hypothesis of the study is accepted, because there is a positive relationship between fear of missing out and social media addiction.
