Abstract

PWHT (Post Weld Heat Treatment) are: heating rate, holding time, cooling rate. The function of PWHT apart from eliminating residual stresses, also improves the crystalline grains of a material and toughness in welding joints. Tested in this study were ASTM A106 carbon steel pipe materials with a diameter of 6” and a thickness of 8 mm. The welding process uses SMAW (Shield Metal Arc Welding) welding with E7016 electrodes using the 6G welding position. In this study using a current variation of 100 A and a 60° V seam. Furthermore, this research uses PWHT Normalizing which aims to eliminate the residual stress that is formed due to the welding process. The material will experience changes in structure and grain size as a result of heating and cooling. This inhomogeneous structure stores residual stress which makes the material have harder properties so that the toughness is low. Furthermore, the Rockwell hardness test was carried out on the C scale with a 120° diamond cone indenter to determine the hardness properties. Furthermore, the Charpy method impact test was carried out to determine the toughness properties of ASTM A106 carbon steel pipes as a result of SMAW welding. From the results of the hardness test where the highest average value was obtained by the material with the Coolant 20 Minute variety of cooling media because it has a hardness value of 55.5 HRC in Base Metal, 56.52 HRC in HAZ, 54.75 in Weld Metal and variations in cooling media 60 minutes of oil has the lowest average hardness value of 43 HRC at the Base Metal and HAZ points, 43.5 HRC at the Weld Metal point and from the impact test results. SMAW welding results PWHT heat treatment with variations in cooling media and holding time, the longer the time holding the specimen in the furnace will increase the impact price. Where the lower the impact price, the toughness of the material will increase. The Coolant 20 minute variation of cooling media has the lowest impact price of 0.021 j/mm² and the 20 minute Air cooling media variation has the highest impact price of 0.284 j/mm² It can be concluded that the PWHT heat treatment with variations of Air, Coolant and Oil cooling media, the more the faster the holding time of the specimen in the furnace, the tougher the material is, conversely, the longer the holding time of the specimen in the furnace will reduce the toughness of the material in ASTM A106 steel pipes.
