Abstract

Welding is a metal joining technique by melting some of the base metal and filler metal with or without pressure and with or without additional metal and produces a continuous connection. This study aims to analyze the effect of variations in SMAW welding currents and seams on the hardness and impact strength of ASTM A106 carbon steel pipes. The material used is ASTM A106 carbon steel pipe with a diameter of 6” and a thickness of 10 mm. The welding process uses SMAW (Shield Metal Arc Welding) welding with an E7016 electrode with a 6G welding position. In this study using a variation of current 60 A, 80 A and 100 A and seam V 60°, K 30°, X 60°. Furthermore, the Rockwell hardness test was carried out on the C scale with a 120° diamond cone indenter to determine the hardness properties. Furthermore, the Charpy method impact test was carried out to determine the toughness properties of ASTM A106 carbon steel pipes as a result of SMAW welding. From the results of the hardness test, the highest hardness was found in Arus 100A seam K with a hardness value of 56.25 HRC in Base Metal, 58.75 HRC in HAZ, 60 HRC in Weld Metal while Flow 60A seam X got the lowest hardness value of 48.5 HRC in Base Metal, 49 HRC in HAZ, 45 HRC in Weld Metal and from the impact test results show that the highest impact value is found in the 60 A current variation with V seam with an impact price of 0.11 J/mm² and the lowest impact value is at a current variation of 100 A with Kampuh K with an impact value of 0.01 J/mm². The results of the hardness test concluded that an increase in the variation of the welding current will increase the hardness properties of the material after welding and the results of the impact test can be concluded that the higher the variation in the welding current, the tougher the material in ASTM A106 carbon steel pipes.
