Abstract

In Indonesia, powder metallurgy is one of the production techniques using powder as the starting material before the forming process. The principle is to compact the metal powder into the desired shape and then heat it below the melting temperature (Saiful, 2012). While the sintering process is a powder consolidation process at high temperatures which also includes the process of pressing or compacting (Asher Paulus, 2004). The raw material used in this research is iron powder with charcoal (carbon). The use of iron powder aims to reduce production waste, reduce subsequent production costs, and get a practical way of producing objects. Quality components and consideration of material characteristics, as well as the benefits generated from iron powder materials will be needed to meet industrial needs. The powder metallurgy process is the process of making products using powder base materials which are then compressed and sintered. This study discusses the composition variation and sintering temperature variation on the mechanical properties of mixed materials of iron powder (iron powder) and Gresik local coconut shell charcoal powder (carbon) in powder metallurgy. The material used in this study is iron powder mixed with Gresik local coconut shell charcoal powder (carbon). with a dose of iron powder (iron powder) of 99%, 98%, 97% - Gresik local coconut shell charcoal (carbon) of 1%, 2%, 3% with the addition of zinc stearate adhesive 5% of the mass weight of the specimen. In comparison using iron powder (iron powder) by 100% with the addition of zinc stearate adhesive 5% of the mass weight of the specimen. then compressed with a pressure of 9000 Psi with a holding time of 10 minutes. Then sintered at temperatures of 900 ℃, 1000 ℃ and 1100 ℃ with a holding time of 90 minutes. After completion of the sintering process, the aging process was carried out on all samples at 900 ℃ with a holding time of 120 minutes. Then density and hardness testing was carried out. For this reason, this study aims to determine the results of testing the density value and hardness value of the alloy of iron powder (iron powder) and Gresik local coconut shell charcoal powder (carbon).
