Abstract

Corrosion events occur because metal undergoes an oxidation process which impacts the service life of a material. Corrosion can make steel porous which must be minimized because it can damage the workpiece. Light hand tools that are often used have a material with a base body that is sufficiently rust resistant to extend its service life, while the workpiece must be pressed at a low production cost, however, rust materials usually have high raw material prices. In this study, AISI 420 steel specimens were used as materials for light hand tools, including hoes, shovels, capi, masonry hammers and so on, which are always in contact with water, soil and air which can accelerate corrosion but must still have a high hardness value. tall. Previous studies have shown that the higher the heat treatment temperature, the higher the hardness value, but has a fairly fast corrosion rate. in other research show's that the cooling process on a material can slow down the corrosion rate. The purpose of this study was to determine the hardness value obtained by varying the temperature of the heat treatment and the corrosion rate that appears with variations in temperature and water, oil and diesel cooling media. The method used is the observation of the rockwell hardness test and weight loss to determine the corrosion rate that occurs after the heat treatment process. Starting with the heat treatment process on the specimen with a temperature variation of 900°C, 925°C, 950°C. Then the specimen is cooled with variations of oil, water and diesel cooling media. After the heat treatment process is complete, the rockwell testing process is continued and the measurement of mass loss due to corrosion is continued.
