Abstract

This research is motivated by the emergence of street art mural as an alternative medium to channel the aspirations and criticism of social and political issues that developed in the community. Many are now found mural on the walls of major cities including Surabaya, which raised social and political themes. The purpose of this study was to determine the intended use of street art mural by the community of States Mural Surabaya as media criticism of public diruang. Data analysis method used is descriptive qualitative research, the data collected is not measured by numbers, it is because this study is a qualitative research. In this study, using critical discourse analysis approach Norman Fairclough referring to the three dimensions in which the text (text), the practice of discourse (discourse practice), and socio-cultural practices (sosiocultural practice). The results of this analysis, Street art mural is the medium used to mengkritiki problems or phenomena that exist in Indonesia. These issues cover all aspects of social, political, environmental, cultural and according to the facts that occurred in the community. street art mural also in the process of formation of discourse is closely connected with the government and people's lives everyday. Street art mural became a symbol of resistance for minorities against arbitrary power. use of media wall or other permanent media on a street art mural has its limitations in the dissemination of information or messages to be conveyed. Discourse on permanent media such as the walls do not move and do not have a voice or visual effects as in other media, namely radio and TV.
