Abstract

This study is about an analysis of Dysfunctional Family in Paul Zindel’s The Effect of Gamma Rays on Man-in-the-Moon Marigolds. The purpose is to find out the dysfunctional family described and the impact of dysfunctional family itself in this drama. Through intrinsic and extrinsic approach (psychological approach) that are used in this study, the writer will identify the dysfunctional family in this play and the impacts which follow it. From this play, the writer finds dysfunctional family such as, addiction, control, unpredictability and fear, conflict, abuse, perfectionism, poor communication and lack of diversity. They tend to make the relationship among the family members worse. They suffer from anxiety disorder, frustration and depression, and disregard and rejection. Based on the analysis, it can be found that the reason why this family becomes dysfunctional is because the mother is getting frustrated and depressed since she loses her father and her husband. She must live alone in a very dirty and messy house with her daughters. Being a single mother, she raises her two daughters, the one has mental disorder and another one is interested in science like a scientist.
