Abstract

Non-renewable energy sources that are widely used today are fossil fuels, namely oil, natural gas, and coal. The potential of water as an energy source is mainly used as a provider of electrical energy through hydropower and micro-hydro power plants. Utilization of water energy is basically the utilization of gravitational potential energy. The mechanical energy of water flow which is a transformation of gravitational potential energy is used to drive a water turbine. The flow of water in rivers can be utilized when the speed is adequate. This study aims to determine how much power, torque and efficiency the three-blade savonius hydrokinetic turbine produces by varying the blade height and horizontal groove on the concave side of the blade. This research was conducted in an open channel (irrigation) by varying the number of grooves three times, namely 0.2, 4 and 6 grooves. Retrieval of rotation data (rpm) is carried out using a tachometer measuring instrument as a measure of shaft rotation (rpm), data collection for water temperature uses a water thermometer, to measure flow velocity is carried out with a float system and the method for loading is sand.
