Abstract

Pencak silat is a traditional martial art originating from Indonesia. Pencak silat is one of Indonesia's original cultural heritages that was passed down by ancestors and passed down from generation to generation. The cultural diversity that exists in Indonesia also gives color in the form of variations in the identity that each pencak silat college has with technical movements, distinctive moves and has high cultural values. In addition, the movements of pencak silat also use dance movements that have developed and live up to now, thus giving an advantage to the martial art of pencak silat. Pencak silat itself has been known and spread in various parts of the world so that it has been studied by nations who like self-defense and made it a sport that excels. With so many enthusiasts from various countries, the Indonesian nation itself began to be displaced from the achievements of pencak silat. Recognizing the importance of preserving Indonesian culture as an ancestral heritage, on 18 May 1948 the Indonesian Pencak Silat Association (IPSI) was formed as a forum for unifying pencak silat schools throughout Indonesia. Surabaya, which is a city with various types of universities, is one of the advantages in producing the best pencak silat athletes, especially since there are many enthusiasts of pencak silat, so the provision of pencak silat facilities in the city of Surabaya is very appropriate, to accommodate pencak silat fans and as a a place for developing talents and achievements for fighters who are able to compete at national and international levels. Thus, pencak silat is no longer just a science to defend/defense oneself, but as a place to excel and create champions who are able to compete.
