Abstract

Iron and steel are most widely used as industrial materials which are a very large source. To get the type of material that has the desired properties, it can be done by re-treating the material with directed techniques. One way to change the properties of carbon steel is the pack carburizing method. This study aims to determine the effect of temperature variations and cooling media on the microstructure and hardness of raw steel ST-41. The source of activated carbon used in this study was fine coconut shell powder and Na2CO3 as an energizer with 90% activated carbon and 10% energizer respectively. In this study, the authors used temperature variations of 850°C, 900°C, 950°C with cooling media of SAE 40 oil, water, and salt water which aims to determine how the results of hardness and microstructure of variations between temperature and cooling media. And also use the holding time or holding time for 45 minutes. The results of the basic material hardness test are 33.65 HRC, while the largest hardness value is at a temperature variation of 950 °C using salt water cooling media, which is 52.25 HRC. The results of the microstructure test on the base material are ferrite and pearlite, while the microstructure of the material after the pack carburizing process is all the same, namely ferrite and pearlite.
