Abstract
Metal Matrx Composite (MMC) is one way to get a material with the desired properties. Currently the method that is developing in the manufacture of composites is powder metallurgy which is a fabrication technique that has a very wide application in various material technology innovations in the industrial world. This study analyzes the effect of variations in compaction pressure and sintering temperature on Al-SiC alloys on density and hardness using powder metallurgy methods. The basic material of this specimen is an aluminum powder mixed with silicon carbide powder. The variation of compaction pressure used is 5000, 5500 and 6000 Psi with a compaction holding time of 10 minutes. The sintering temperature variation of 525 ℃, 550 ℃ and 575 ℃ was carried out for 120 minutes which were then cooled using free air. The sintered specimen will be subjected to density testing and hardness testing. From the test results, the highest density value was obtained at a pressure of 6000 Psi with a temperature of 525 ℃ is 2.877 grcm3 and the lowest value was obtained at a pressure of 5000 Psi with a temperature of 575 ℃ is 2.764 grcm3. From the results of the hardness test, it was found that the hardness value at a pressure of 6000 Psi with a temperature of 525 ℃ is 59.33 HRB, and the lowest value was obtained at a pressure of 5000 Psi with a temperature of 575 ℃ is 48.67 HRB. This shows that the sintering pressure and temperature are very influential, with increasing the applied prssure, the density and hardness values will increase.
