Abstract

At the time of welding, a material will experience uneven heating between the weld metal, base metal, and the HAZ. This results in an inhomogeneous structural change that causes residual stresses to occur. As a result of this residual stress, the material becomes hard and brittle. There is a way to free the residual stress, namely the thermal method, namely the post weld heat treatment (PWHT) process. The selection of PWHT parameters on the SMAW welding process has been determined so as to get excellent results and data. Because each difference in temperature variation and holding time has a different hardness value. This study aims to analyze the microstructure and hardness of the JIS G 3131 SPHC steel plate material using post weld heat treatment (PWHT) on SMAW welding using variations in temperature and holding time. The test object after the welding was carried out by PWHT with temperatures of 850°C, 875°C, 900°C with holding times of 20 minutes, 40 minutes, 60 minutes. The tests carried out are: microstructure testing and Rockwell hardness testing. The test results in the base metal area with the lowest hardness were found in untreated specimens with a value of 46.1 HRC while the highest hardness was found in specimens with a temperature variation of 900°C with a holding time of 60 minutes with a value of 49.5 HRC, in the HAZ section the lowest hardness was in specimens with a variation of 900°C with a holding time of 60 minutes with a value of 47.9 HRC. While the highest hardness was found in untreated specimens with a value of 52.7 HRC. In the weld metal area, the lowest hardness was found in the specimen with a temperature variation of 900°C with a holding time of 60 minutes with a value of 47.3 HRC, while the highest hardness was found in an untreated specimen with a value of 53 HRC. Thus, the longer the holding time at each temperature used, the lower the hardness of the HAZ and the weld metal, but it is different from the base metal where the higher the temperature and the holding time, the hardness will increase.
