Abstract
This study focuses on lexical relation types between the word racism and the expressions of the concept of racism that are found in Alex Haley’s Malcolm X Autobiography. The study is based on lexical fieldtheoryon types of semantic relations, particularly those discussed in Kriedler (1998) and Finnegan (2004), who identified such relations ashyponymy, synonymy and antonymy. Using descriptive qualitative design, the study involves seventy seven (77) data in forms of sentences containing expressions of racism in words or groups of words. The study found fifty (50) nouns indicating hyponymy relation, eight (8) data on antonymy, consisting of five (5) nouns and three (3) verbs, and nineteen (19) expressions showing synonymy relation, consisting of ten (10) nouns, six (6) verbs and three (3) adjectives. The various types of relations and the frequent occurrence of the hyponymy relation shows that the the abstract concept of racism is tightly expressed in various ways, especially in more specific and concrete terms and expressions.
